AI-Generated Content on YouTube: New Monetization Rules Explained

YouTube has initiated a significant policy shift designed to address the growing prevalence of low-quality, AI-generated “mass-produced” videos on its site. Starting on July 15, 2025, the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) will enforce stricter criteria, necessitating that content is notably original and genuine to be eligible for monetization.

For content creators utilizing AI solutions to produce large volumes of material, this update serves as a distinct indication: YouTube is implementing measures to safeguard its platform against what many in the industry refer to as “AI slop” – subpar, redundant, and spammy videos that have surged with the advent of generative AI tools.

What’s changing?                 

YouTube has consistently mandated that content must be original and authentic for monetization, but the updated policy seeks to clarify what is deemed “inauthentic” in an era where AI is easily accessible everywhere. YouTube’s Head of Editorial & Creator Liaison, stated that the revision is a “minor clarification” instead of a significant transformation, but it will assist the platform in better recognizing mass-produced or repetitive content that lacks human value.

Instances of content that may face demonetization include videos made entirely from AI-generated text-to-video clips, appropriated or reused footage, automated voice narration paired with stock images, and channels that upload substantial amounts of low-quality AI-generated content.

Will all AI content be demonetized?

It is not a strict requirement. YouTube has clarified that monetization is possible for AI-assisted content as long as it is original, notably transformed, and offers additional human value. The purpose of the policy is to eliminate spam and subpar repetitions, rather than to prohibit creators from incorporating AI as part of their process, as long as the final outcome adheres to YouTube’s standards for originality.

What creators should watch out for?

Creators who mostly use AI to create videos should think about changing their approach. Even though YouTube has not shared the exact new rules yet, the updated YouTube Partner Program guidelines warn that channels posting lots of AI-made videos without enough human editing or input could lose money. The update makes it clear that YouTube still values real, human creativity when it comes to earning money from videos. AI is not banned, but it must be used wisely and with care.

To sum up, YouTube’s updated guidelines are designed to ensure that the platform remains populated with authentic, high-quality videos. While creators can still utilize AI, they are required to incorporate their own concepts, editing, and creativity to produce original content. Merely replicating or employing AI to churn out numerous low-quality videos may result in demonetization.
