Instagram and Threads Latest Updates What Users Need to Know

New Instagram Update: Picture-in-Picture Viewing for Reels

Instagram is presently testing a new feature for its Reels called picture in picture (PiP) mode.  This new option allows users to continue viewing a Reel in a small window even after they exit the app.  Some users are being shown the feature, with a suggestion to try it out, and a new PiP setting has appeared.  This is a significant move for Instagram because it allows consumers to do other things on their phones, such as check messages, while a video is playing.

Bringing a Popular Feature to Instagram

This modification aims to make the app more useful for multitaskers.  TikTok and YouTube already offer a PiP feature that allows users to watch videos outside of their apps.  By introducing this feature, Instagram is catching up with its competitors.

The idea is to keep users engaged and consuming content for extended periods of time by eliminating the need for them to remain in the app to complete a video.  This new viewing option has the potential to expand the amount of time individuals spend watching content as well as the reach of videos.

How it Benefits Both Viewers and Creators

For frequent viewers, picture in picture makes watching Reels much more flexible.  You can start a video and then switch to another app without it pausing.  This makes the experience easier and more convenient.

For creators, this is also wonderful news.  The option for viewers to continue viewing while performing other chores increases the likelihood that a video will be watched in its entirety.  This can boost a creator’s “retention rate,” which is an important indicator for success.  This new feature demonstrates that Instagram is listening to what its users want and aiming to enhance the Reel experience for all.
